Normal Town Council candidate Pat Turner said the town could do more to improve walk-and-bikeability.

A Normal Town Council candidate would like to see the town be more accessible for people who walk and bike.

Pat Turner served on the town's 20/20 Vision Planning Committee.

“I don’t think we’ve done as much as we should and I do feel some of the recent changes that we’ve made to our transportation infrastructure still lacks that critical piece,” Turner said.

Turner added she would like to see those improvements primarily near apartment buildings, food pantries and hospitals.

Turner runs outreach programs for Center for Hope Ministries in Bloomington and has founded the Center for Hope Pantry and the Temba food pantries.

Turner said her nearly 30 years of experience in non-profit organizations working on food insecurity, homelessness, senior care and other issues would serve her well in elected office.

“You don’t run a non-profit in a silo, you have to work with other people,” Turner said. “You have to collaborate, you have to work across sector.

“I do believe I will bring that skill to the table.”

Turner said she also views her candidacy as an opportunity to make sure “all voices are heard,” including those from underrepresented areas.

“I welcome the opportunity to provide a listening ear to local residents who long to be heard,” Turner said.

Turner is seeking one of three open seats on the Normal Town Council in the April 2 election. R.C. McBride and Kathleen Lorenz are seeking re-election. Jeff Fritzen is not. Other announced candidates include Stan Nord, Dave Shields, Karyn Smith and Joel Studebaker.
