Peoria To Discuss Recreational Cannabis Businesses on Saturday

The Peoria City Council will hold a special meeting on Saturday to determine the city's directon on recreational cannabis businesses.

The new state law legalizing recreational cannabis usage goes into effect on Jan. 1. But the law also allows municipalities wide leeway on whether or not to allow the cultivation and sale of recreational cannabis within their communities.

It's a debate towns and cities across the state are mired in. Morton and El Paso opted out of sales entirely. Other governments, like East Peoria, Canton and Woodford County, are currently in the midst of policy-setting conversations.

Peoria already has a medical cannabis dispensary, Trinity Compassionate Care, located at 3125 N. University. As an existing dispensary, Trinity would have a leg up over new businesses to obtain one of 75 recreational cannabis business licenses from the state in the first year of legalization if the city of Peoria opts to allow sales within its borders.

The meeting is set for 9 a.m. Saturday in the council chambers at Peoria City Hall.
