Peoria Police Ask Residents To Register Cameras

Peoria residents are being asked to register their personal security cameras with the police department.

The voluntary program lets police pull up a map of the area where a crime occurs and see if anyone has cameras on their home or business.

Peoria Police Chief Loren Marion said it’s just another tool to help police solve crimes.

“On canvasses, a lot of times, people aren’t home or may not want to answer the door,” he said. “This will give an opportunity for officers to contact people on a lower profile basis.”

When a crime occurs, police will reach out to residents with cameras registered in the area to see if they have any video evidence.

“This is not something where the police department is going to have access to a person’s camera system,” Marion said. “We won’t be able to see videos or anything. This is something that simply gives us the information that the individual has a camera at that location.”

Marion encourages those who have already signed up for the Neighbors by Ring to also register their cameras through the new program.

Registration is now live on the city’s website.
