A Tazewell County man in his 60s became the Tri-County area’s latest death linked to COVID-19, while the region has topped 130,000 total doses of coronavirus vaccines administered since they became available.
Public health officials on Monday reported the lone new fatality along with 109 additional infections since Friday. The area’s case count since the start of the pandemic increased to 34,624 while the death toll is now 586.
Eight of the 26 patients at Peoria-area hospitals with COVID-19 are in intensive care units, while close to 350 residents are isolating at home.
Meanwhile, updated figures on the Illinois Department of Public Health’s online database show Peoria, Tazewell and Woodford counties added 5,252 administered vaccines over the past three days, with second injections accounting for 3,343 of those.
That brings the region’s totals to 130,524 total doses and 48,782 fully vaccinated residents, or 13.9% of the area population. Peoria County alone accounts for 27,745 individuals who have received two shots, which is 15.4% of residents. The three counties’ combined daily average for injections over the past week is just under 2,400.
Illinois has racked up almost 3.39 million vaccinations with 1.15 million booster shots among the total, meaning 17.5% of the state’s population has gotten at least one injection – but just 9% is fully vaccinated.
The IDPH reported 1,182 new COVID cases and five deaths in the past day. Illinois is now less than 500 shy of 2 million infections with 20,767 fatalities attributed to the pandemic. The preliminary seven-day testing positivity rate held steady at 2.8%.
