Washington Police Chief Mike McCoy holds a press conference on Tuesday, June 23, to announce Kyle McMurtrey's death is now considered a homicide.

Washington police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found behind a shopping center as a homicide.

Kyle McMurtrey, 34, of Washington, was found dead behind Washington Plaza last Wednesday. Washington Police Chief Mike McCoy said its the first violent murder reported in the city in years.

"Obviously, we're concerned. We want to solve this. But we've got some persons of interest that we're dealing with, and we're already talking to them, and we're following up on all the leads we've got," he said.

Police are reviewing video footage shot on nearby surveillance cameras.

McCoy said there's no need for alarm among the general public.

"I think this is an isolated incident that involved this person, and perhaps people that he knew," McCoy said.

He's asking anyone with information to contact Washington Police at (309) 444-1110 or the Illinois State Police at (217) 993-2088.

Officials are declining to reveal the manner of McMurtrey's death.
