Washington Police Investigating 2nd Homicide This Month

Tim Shelley / Peoria Public Radio

The Washington Police Department is investigating the city's second homicide this month.

Police were called to conduct welfare check on a man at his residence on Holland Street around 12:30 p.m. Monday. The man was found dead.

Washington Police Chief Mike McCoy said one person is in custody. He said there's no signs of ongoing danger to the public in connection with the homicide.

The man's identity hasn't yet been released. Two weeks ago, 34-year-old Kyle McMurtrey of Washington was found dead behind Washington Plaza in a suspected homicide. It's unknown if there is any link between the two deaths.

The two murders happening in  the span of just a couple weeks are unusual in the city of Washington, which hadn't reported another violent homicide for at least several years.

The Washington Police Department is investigating the second murder with the Tazewell County Sheriff's Office, Tazewell County Coroner, and Illinois State Police. More information is expected at a press conference Tuesday morning.
