  • The maker of Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth has just released his first novel. The Strain merges the folklore of vampire tales with the very modern paranoia over pandemics.
  • Actor David Carradine was found dead Thursday in a Bangkok, Thailand, hotel room. The actor was best known for his leading role in the 1970s television series Kung Fu. Carradine was in Thailand shooting a movie, one of well over a 100 filmed during a long, eclectic career.
  • Hollywood has been shaken up by the recent merger of two big talent agencies. Endeavor and the William Morris Agency represent some of the biggest stars of film and television.   • The Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland bills itself as the world's biggest arts festival. The Fringe is the place where comedians, actors and playwrights go to be discovered. Each year, one play tends to grab the headlines and awards. This year it's Precious Little Talent by 24-year-old Ella Hickson. Last year, her play Eight got her noticed.
  • "The Model As Muse" exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York chronicles 50 years of models from the fashion industry.
  • The production bought the skull for $400 from a dealer in Salt Lake City. Barry Edelstein, director of The Public Theater Shakespeare Initiative, says this is not the first time a real skull has been used in a production of Shakespeare's play.
  • British actor Anthony Head is probably best known for his roles as the smooth-talking neighbor with the mysterious smile in the soap opera-style Taster's Choice commercials and as Buffy the Vampire Slayer's fatherly "Watcher," Giles. He talks coffee, children and his part as a criminal on the BBC series The Invisibles.
  • Dennis Hopper starred in and directed the seminal movie Easy Rider 40 years ago. In honor of that anniversary, Taos, N.M., is hosting "Taos Summer of Love 2009." Hopper, a sometime resident of Taos, is curating an exhibit of paintings and photographs there as part of the city's celebration.
