NPR's Tom Gjelten reports from Sarajevo that the city is whole again. Grbavica ((gur-buh-VEE-tsuh)), the last of five suburbs, has been returned from Serb control to the Muslim-Croat Federation. Today's hand-over was more orderly than the others. However, Muslims returning to the suburb they'd left four years ago found buildings and homes devesated by fires set by departing Serb arsonists.
Don Gonyea Reports From Ann Arbor, Michigan, Where A Group Of Parents
and children have been taking turns waiting in line around the clock for the last two weeks, in hopes of gaining admission to the city's only alternative public high school.
Crime Stats
A report released by the FBI yesterday says the nation's crime rate is down this year. Large cities have had the most significant drop in crime, while rural areas have experienced a slight increase. NPR's Cheryl Corley reports that the Justice Department attributes the falling crime rates to improved community policing efforts, but some criminologists say its difficult to pinpoint the reasons for the drop in crime.
One Firefighter's Story
Linda talks with Manny Rodriguez, a firefighter and paramedic for the city of Miami. Rodriguez talks about what he saw when he responded yesterday to an accident involving a Brinks truck in one of the poorest sections of Miami. Money was scattered in trees and all over the ground, and people were scooping up as much as they could carry. Rodriguez himself found a canvas bag containing over $300,000.
Hamlet And Evita
Critic Bob Mondello reviews two movies... a 4-hour version of Shakespeare's "Hamlet" directed by Kenneth Branagh and "Evita," a musical based on the stage play directed by Alan Parker and starring Madonna as Eva Peron. Both films are lush feasts for the eyes, and both are opening today in Los Angeles and New York and will open in other cities in January.

Subway Etiquette
NPR's Melissa Block reports on an experiment in the New York City subway system this week. At one stop, platform controllers were out in great numbers to enforce this radical concept: that those trying to get ON the train should step aside, and wait for those getting OFF. The idea is to speed the flow of trains during rush hour. Subway riders generally think the idea's great, and probably necessary only in New York.
Internet And Advertising
For years, newspapers and yellow pages have had a virtual monopoly on certain kinds of advertising. But the swift rise of the internet is creating new forms of competition that could change the established order. Websites that specialize in local events and entertainment are springing up in cities around the country...and many of these sites are expected to aggressively compete for local advertising dollars. NPR's John McChesney reports.
Belgrade
NPR's Edward Lifson is in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, where the government of President Slobodan Milosevic brought in riot police to crack down on Opposition Party demonstrators. The marches to protest election fraud have been blocking traffic in the middle of the city for five weeks. Today, the police enforced a new ban on demonstrators by pushing an estimated 30-thousand protestors away from the main street they were blocking.

Living In Russia
- With Russia's presidential elections just one week away, Daniel talks to two Russian voters and asks them whether they're better off now than they were five years ago, when Boris Yeltsin first came to power. The voters are Tamara Khamutova, an English language professor in the central Russian city of Chelyabinsk; and Liusia Polshakova, a Moscow housewife and mother of three.
Colombia And U-S
The president of Colombia, Ernesto Semper, has been accused of taking millions of dollars in campaign contributions from drug cartels. NPR's Tom Gjelten reports from Bogota, Columbia, on the reaction in the city to the allegations and their fallout internationally. The U-S has publicized many of the accusations, but many Colombians think the criticism by the U-S is unjust and support their President.
