Clinton in Colombia
NPR's Martin Kaste (KAH-stee) talks with host Linda Wertheimer about President Clinton's visit to Colombia to endorse his latest plan to curb drug trafficking. Clinton was meeting Colombian President Pastrana in the coastal city of Cartagena in the wake of a one-point-three-billion dollar package of aid and military support for the Colombian army to help fight guerillas and the drug overlords who support them.
Sound the Horns!
From Minnesota Public Radio Bob Kelleher reports that the lift-bridge that separates, Lake Superior from the Duluth harbour has gotten its voice back. The bridge's original...but very loud...horns were replaced by quieter pipes last year. But city residents felt their bridge had lost some of its character, and started a petition drive to bring the blaring horns back.
Mideast Peace
NPR's Jennifer Ludden reports on his way home tomorrow, President Clinton will stop off in Cairo for urgent talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak about the stalled Middle East peace process. Clinton is urging Mubarak to try to get his fellow Arabs to agree to continued Israeli sovereignty over the Old City of Jerusalem, something Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat refuses to accept.
San Mateo Dot-com Ban
Protests and rallies against how "dot-com" culture is changing certain districts in the San Francisco bay area just reached a new level. This month the city of San Mateo banned "dot-coms" from locating in its downtown district. From member station KQED, Caitlyn Kim reports.
Broadband Access
The FCC reports that the market for fast Internet connections is growing rapidly, with the number of residential subscribers about tripling over the past year. But in its annual survey of access to broadband service, the agency says access is still expensive or not available for people in rural or inner city areas. The report adds that some areas might never get service with current technologies because it's simply too expensive.
Greg Brown
Midwestern singer-songwriter Greg Brown is both a road poet and a keen observer of the natural world. He says that he likes to think about his work as stories sanded down into songs. His new CD is called Covenant; it's his 17th album. He talks to Jacki from his home in Iowa City. (Red House Records 2000)
NY Congressional Primary
A Congressional primary in Brooklyn has brought longstanding distrust between African-American and Caribbean-American communities. Congressman Major Owens, who is black, is being challenged in tomorrow's primary by a Jamaican-born city council member, Una Clarke, who claims Owens has ignored the growing Caribbean influx in the district. Beth Fertig from member station WNYC reports.
Corruption Trial in China
NPR's Rob Gifford reports that China's largest corruption trial begins today in four cities in the southeastern province of Fujian. President Jiang Zemin, who heads the 61 million-member Communist Party, has declared clean government a goal of his rule. But the Fujian scandal has tainted members of the elite ruling circle, among them one of Jiang's proteges.
Church Payoff Vetoed
Jason DeRose of Chicago Public Radio reports that the Mayor of Palos Heights, Illinois has vetoed a city council proposal to pay the Al Salaam Mosque Foundation not to open a mosque in the suburb. Mayor Dean Koldenhoven said last night that the proposal was an insult to Muslims and that he hopes the foundation will go ahead and open its mosque in the building formerly used as a Christian church.
