Some House Republicans are considering sending President Clinton a welfare reform bill he once endorsed, but now considers inadequate. Last year, Mr Clinton vetoed a measure formed from House and Senate bills, but he said he could sign the Senate version. Now, the president says the Senate bill is just a basis for reform. NPR's Peter Kenyon reports.

The first residents of Celebration, Florida are moving in. The town is a development run by the Disney corporation near their theme parks. Designed to encourage community spirit and interaction between neighbors, shopping streets are within walking distance of each home and the houses have large front porches. The cost of houses range from about $200,000 to a million dollars.

NPR's Peter Overby reports on today's release of an interim report from the House Ethics Committee into allegations against House Speaker Newt Gingrich. An investigative subcommittee has been looking into the relationship of GOPAC, Gingrich's former political action committee, to a college course that Gingrich taught from 1993 to 1995.

The seat for Governor, two seats in the House and even the one in the White House are all still being hotly contested.

The House of Representatives approved today the main portion of President Bush's $1.6 trillion tax cut. Republican leaders were exultant about passing the president's prize proposal in record time. The vote followed party lines, despite weeks of courtship by the White House. And the bill faces an uncertain future in the Senate, where a bipartisan group of centrists is insisting on modifications. NPR's David Welna reports.

President Bush is focusing on national security this week in a series of visits to military bases. Today he inspected troops at an Army base in Georgia. (The president told soldiers at Fort Stewart that he would raise their pay and improve their housing as a way of raising morale and encouraging recruitment in the armed forces.) NPR's White House correspondent Don Gonyea was there.

The House of Representatives will vote tomorrow on the first trillion-dollar portion of President Bush's proposed tax cuts, and approval is expected. But the Bush administration and House Republican leaders want a show of bipartisan support to build momentum for a later showdown in the Senate.
