Elizabeth Arnold Reports From Des Moines Where Iowa Voters Are Being
courted by presidential candidates. With the state's caucuses a little over a week away, voters are just beginning to focus on the field of candidates and are clearly undecided on any one favorite.
Natural Gas
Commentator David Fleischaker says we're facing high prices and a shortage of natural gas, with fewer rigs drilling, new fields less productive than old ones, and an explosion of demand. Natural gas has become the clean fuel of choice for consumers, industry, and the electric utility industry. The solution, he says, lies in balancing fuel development and the environment -- and learning to consume less.
Protest Problems
NPR's Andy Bowers reports a judge in Los Angeles has ruled the city's plan to keep convention protesters away from the Staples Center violates the first amendment because it would force those protesting to go more than two football fields away from the site. City planners are now trying to come up with a new plan that satisfies both the convention and protesters.
Babe On The Mound
Linda talks with Pamela Davis, a pitcher for the Colorado Silver Bullets baseball team. Last night, she became the first woman player to take the field for a sanctioned men's baseball team as she filled in during the fifth inning as a pitcher for the Jacksonville Suns in an exhibition game against the Australian Olympic team. Davis was credited with the win, in a six-to-nothing shutout.
What To Expect From The MLB All-Star Game
On Monday night, Pete Alonso of the New York Mets won the Home Run Derby at Coors Field in Denver.

Iowa Campaign
Robert talks with NPR's Elizabeth Arnold about the upcoming Iowa caucuses. Pat Buchanan's surprise win in Louisiana earlier this week against Texas Sen. Phil Gramm has shaken up the Republican field and several candidates think they have a shot at coming in, at least second, in Iowa. However, there are still many undecideds in the state, and it is unclear what impact the well organized religious right will have on the outcome.
Redskins Seek Relief from Workers' Comp Rules
The NFL's Washington Redskins ask Virginia lawmakers to exclude players injured on the field from workers' compensation benefits. The NFL Players Union is fighting the move. NPR's Adam Hochberg reports.

Labeling Engineered Food
NPR's Emily Harris reports on a four-day meeting in Ottawa to discuss whether genetically engineered food should be labeled as such. Many common foods contain genetically engineered ingredients. Food manufacturers are worried if product labels disclosed that, consumer fear would put an end to the promising field of biotechnology.
