Chubias Tape
NPR's Andy Bowers reports from Moscow on how a political scandal is playing out. Today, the lower house of the Russian parliament called on President Yeltsin to suspend his Chief of Staff, Anatoly Chubais. A week ago, Chubais was the central figure in a newspaper story alleging illegal activity during the Presidential campaign earlier this year. The story, said to be based on tape recordings of a meeting, alleged political pay-offs, hush-money and a cover-up. Chubais called the recordings fake and today began a counter attack against his accusers.

Pow-Mia
The Military Personnel subcommittee of the House National Security committee has released newly-declassified documents that show the Eisenhower administration suspected that North Korea still held hundreds of American prisoners after the war. One memo says Army Secretary Robert Stevens told President Eisenhower that the services had the names of more than 900 servicemen believed to have been in prison camps, who were unaccounted for. The subcommittee's chairman, Congressman Robert Dornan, speculates that Eisenhower did not pursue the issue for fear the dispute would lead to nuclear war. NPR's John Nielsen reports.

Candice Gingrich
Danny talks to Candace Gingrich, half sister of House Speaker Newt Gingrich, about her new book `The Accidental Activist' (Scribner Publishing) She talks of the pain she felt when she learned through research of Newt's congressional record and speeches, how he felt about homosexuals. She admits that she has become a national spokesperson on the issue because of her famous brother, but isn't bothered by that because she says the situation has given her a chance to speak out about something she feels deeply about.

Bob Edwards Talks To Congressman David Bonior,
a Democrat from Michigan, who could become Majority Leader, if his party wins back control of the House in next Tuesday's election. As Minority Whip in the 104th Congress, Bonior is in line for the number two leadership position behind Congressman Dick Gephardt. However, even if Democrats do gain a majority, Bonior may not become Majority Leader, because some members of his party consider him too liberal and plan to challenge him.
Annan Visit
NPr's Ann Cooper reports that the New U-N Secretary General Kofi Annan (KOH-fee AN-nan) took his promises of reform to Capitol Hill today, trying to convince skeptical members of Congress that the United Nations is still a vital investment. The U-S has failed to pay over a billion dollars that it owes to the U-N, partly because of intense congressional criticism of U-N management. In a meeting with Annan today, House Speaker Newt Gingrich said that he believed problems with the U-N could be worked out, and made it clear that Congress does NOT want to shut the world body of diplomats down.
Speech Excerpts
Excerpts from the nationally broadcast speeches last night by Al Gore and George W. Bush. Vice President Gore said he strongly disagrees with Tuesday's Supreme Court decision but "accepts the finality of the outcome." He conceded his defeat "for the sake of our unity as a people and the strength of our democracy." President-elect Bush spoke of "a desire to move beyond the bitterness and partisanship of the recent past." He added, "Our nation must rise above a house divided. Americans share hopes and goals and values far more important than any political disagreements."

Authorities: Mounting Evidence of Al Qaeda Role in Kenya Attacks
Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi heads to Washington, D.C. for a meeting with President Bush at the White House. Bush has offered U.S. help in the investigation of last week's terrorist attacks in Mombasa. U.S. officials say an al Qaeda claim of responsibility appears credible. Hear NPR's Michael Sullivan.

The firm's clients include the FBI, the Federal Aviation Administration and the U.S. House of Representatives. Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge says there is no evidence the company has posed a threat to national security. No one has been arrested, and no charges have been filed.
