Bush's Medicare Restructure Proposal
NPR's Steve Inskeep reports on Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush's proposal to cut income taxes and restructure Medicare. His plan would allow senior citizens the option of keeping their current federal coverage, or trade it in for private plans. Democrats say the proposal would cost the federal government billions...undermining plans for new tax cuts.
Medical School Applicants on the Decline
NPR's Patricia Neighmond reports on a new survey in the Journal of the American Medical Association which shows a decline in the number of students applying to medical school. Experts say the booming economy and wider choices in the health care field could be among the reasons for the decline. Some say doctor complaints about long hours and less pay could also be factors.
The Latest in Congress
NPR's Peter Kenyon reports on how this session of Congress is winding down. Legislation that was expected to pass earlier this year including a patient's bill of rights and a prescription drug benefit for seniors seem to have lost momentum. But a minimum wage increase and the China Trade bill still have a chance at becoming laws.
New Study on Attention Deficit Disorders
NPR's Allison Aubrey reports on a new study in the journal Pediatrics which focuses on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. The study focused on the frequency of the condition among children and how ADHD is being treated.
Older Olympians
NPR's Joshua Levs reports on the older Olympian. The average age of an athlete on this year's U.S. team is around 28, and several high-profile competitors are in their mid to late 30's. Experts say changes in sports science, including training and nutrition, are helping to push back what scientists have long considered the age of peak performance.
Prayer and High School Football
Commentator Frank Deford weighs in with his feelings on prayer at high school football games.
Drought in Texas
Host Bob Edwards talks with Robert Breunig, Executive Director of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin about the impact of the on-going drought in Central Texas
Got Milk?
NPR's Elaine Korry reports on the protest over the Labor Day weekend, in which dairy farmers around the country dumped more than two million gallons of milk to protest low prices. Dairy farmers are asking the government to raise the federal price support for raw milk because, they say, they're losing money, despite relatively high retail prices.
High Tech Auto Options
Host Bob Edwards talks to Paul Eisenstein about the high tech options available on this year's new car models. Eisenstein is publisher of The Car Connection dot com.
Blind Eye
Host Bob Edwards talks with James Stewart, about the federal case against a former doctor who goes on trial today on charges of murdering three patients at a veterans hospital in New York State in 1993. The defendant, Michael Swango, is the subject of Stewart's book, Blind Eye: How the Medical Establishment Let a Doctor Get Away with Murder. (3:40) Blind Eye: How the Medical Establishment Let a Doctor Get Away with Murder is published by Simon & Schuster; ISBN: 06848
