  • President Bush announces an agreement with India to share nuclear reactors, fuel and expertise with the energy-starved nation in return for its acceptance of international safeguards. The plan would reverse decades of U.S. policy against nuclear cooperation with states that have not signed the nonproliferation treaty.
  • In Punta Gorda, Fla., and elsewhere along the state's southwest coast, residents prepare in earnest for the arrival of Hurricane Wilma. The area is still recovering from the effects of Hurricane Charlie a year ago.
  • The CDC reports a historic increase in firearm deaths. During the pandemic, there has been a 35% increase in the firearm homicide rate, and suicides by firearm also are persistently high.
  • President Bush concludes his European trip in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia. In the capital city of Tbilisi, the president spoke before tens of thousands of cheering people. He praised democratic reforms Georgia and its young leader Mikhail Saakashvili are undertaking.
  • There have been anecdotal reports of a housing shortage in Bloomington-Normal for years. Now, the Bloomington- Normal Economic Development Council has a new analysis that shows the shortage is significant and has grown since the last study done five years ago.
  • The Colorado River's reservoirs have declined so much that officials say major water cuts will be necessary as soon as 2023. This comes after years of unrelenting drought worsened by climate change.
