Israeli Gaza Bombing Continues; Deaths Near 350
Israeli warplanes pounded the Gaza Strip for a third day Monday. The death toll in Gaza surpassed 300, with at least 1,000 wounded. U.N. officials say more than 80 of the Palestinian dead are civilians. Two Israeli civilians are known to have died so far in Hamas rocket attacks.

U.S. forces spread out in the earthquake-ravaged Haitian capital Tuesday as part of a massive humanitarian relief effort. Soldiers from the 82nd Airborne took control of the crumpled national palace one week after the deadly quake.

Not Since Pinochet, Chile's Army Back On The Streets
Soldiers are back on the streets of Chile for the first time since military rule ended two decades ago. President Michelle Bachelet was arrested and tortured under the regime of Augusto Pinochet. Her father died in prison. For Bachelet, it was a tough decision to call out the troops, but Chileans are welcoming the military's role in earthquake relief efforts.
