School Uniforms
Jacki talks with Hal Seamon, deputy executive director of the National School Boards Association. President Clinton today supported the concept of requiring kids to wear school uniforms, although he said the requirement should be imposed by local school boards and not the federal government. Seamon supports the idea and says places that HAVE school uniforms are seeing a positive change in student behavior.
The Cardinals
Alan Cheuse reviews "The Cardinals," a novel by the well-known South African writer Bessie Head. Cheuse says the book, which tells of the transformation of a journalist during the oppressive days of apartheid, is raw and powerful.
Good Nafta & Bad Nafta
NPR's Jim Zarroli reports that the debate over the North American Free Trade Agreement has resurfaced, with political candidates making claims and counter-claims about the trade agreement's effect on jobs in the U.S. Pat Buchanan insists that NAFTA has cost the U.S. 300,000 jobs, but most economists say he has no hard evidence to support such claim.
More Dupont
Linda talks with Greg Strobel, head wrestling coach at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Strobel worked as a trainer on Du Pont's estate until late last year and knew murder victim, wrestler Dave Schultz.
Magic Returns
Robert talks with Charlie Pierce, a writer for GQ and a commentator-at-large for WBUR in Boston, about the return of Magic Johnson to professional basketball. Johnson, who was diagnosed with HIV, retired from basketball two years ago.
Write In Vote Good
Commentator Alan Sipporin says the write-in vote that Oregonians are conducting now in a special election to replace Senator Packwood is good for democracy. He says more people participate in the write-in vote and it's cheaper, too.
Week In Review
A sound montage of a few prominent voices in this past week's ews, including President Clinton, Transportation Secretary Federico Pena and epublican presidential candidates Pat Buchanan, Phil Gramm, Lamar Alexander, ob Dole and Robert Dornan.
What Does It Mean For Peace?
Robert discusses the significance and ramifications of the bombing with Irish Times writer Connor O'Clery and Newsweek International editor Michael Elliot.
Iowa Campaign
Robert talks with NPR's Elizabeth Arnold about the upcoming Iowa caucuses. Pat Buchanan's surprise win in Louisiana earlier this week against Texas Sen. Phil Gramm has shaken up the Republican field and several candidates think they have a shot at coming in, at least second, in Iowa. However, there are still many undecideds in the state, and it is unclear what impact the well organized religious right will have on the outcome.
