Nobel Prize in Medicine
Host Bob Edwards talks with reporter Richard Harris about the latest winners of the Nobel Prize for Medicine. Two Americans and Swede got the one-million-dollar prize this year, for their work on "signal transduction" in the nervous system -- work which is necessary for understanding the origins of many neurological and psychological diseases.
Changing Face of America: Flex-Time
NPR's David Molpus visits a group of flex-time lawyers in Philadelphia, as he continues to explore how Americans are changing the way they work. The lawyers discuss how their part-time work schedules affect their career advancement and their family lives. Many American workers are discovering the benefits of flexible work schedules, but there are drawbacks. This report is the latest in the NPR series, "The Changing Face of America."

Nobel Prizes
Three scientists will share this year's Nobel Prize in Medicine for their research on the brain. Two Americans and a Swede, working independently, helped reveal the brain chemistry that explains subtle mental processes such as mood, alertness and memory. The research also led to drugs for diseases such as Parkinson's and depression. NPR's Richard Harris reports.
Concealed Carry
There is growing concern among gun control advocates that mandated background checks for weapons purchasers are inadequate. A report by the Los Angeles Times last week revealed that in Texas, hundreds of felons were granted permits to carry concealed weapons. The paper said the state had failed to carry out complete background checks. However, more than 30 other states allow people to carry concealed weapons, and researchers say it is almost impossible to find out information about crimes committed by permit holders. It's also hard to find out if criminals are slipping through the background check. NPR's Eric Westervelt reports.
