Former Governor Sentenced
Former Louisiana Governor Edwin Edwards has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for racketeering and extortion during his term in office. NPR's Debbie Elliott reports.

Pinochet
NPR's Martin Kaste reports that former dictator General Augusto Pinochet continues to defy Chilean courts. Yesterday, he refused to submit to a medical examination designed to determine whether he is mentally fit to stand trial. Pinochet is accused in the disappearance of dozens of his political opponents during his rule. The president of the supreme court today said the high court has the means to enforce its decisions. It's unclear what action the courts might take against Pinochet, although arrest of the aging general certainly is a possibility.

Is the economy in the process of making a "soft landing," or a "hard landing?" Is it on the brink of a "down turn" or a "recession?" Ford - Firestone Settlement
NPR's Jackie Northam reports on the settlement that stopped Ford and Firestone from facing a Texas woman in court. She was paralyzed when the tire tread on an SUV separated, one of many accidents that lead to the recall of millions of tires. Her lawyers say the settlement involves a large amount of money and a promise to tell the public more about the problem.

NPR's Brian Naylor reports on the announcement by Linda Chavez that she has withdrawn her name as President-Elect Bush's nominee for Secretary of Labor. Chavez announced her decision yesterday, after opponents criticized her for helping an illegal immigrant. Chavez said she's a victim of the 'politics of personal destruction.'
