Federal Budget
NPR's David Welna reports on budget negotiations in Congress, where President Bush is trying to push through his 10-year, $1.6 trillion tax-cut plan. Lawmakers are said to be working towards a bipartisan compromise that would give Mr. Bush less than he asked for, but one that -- according to one senator -- both sides could "live with."

Dolphin Close-Ups
Heretofore, zoologists believed that only primates (humans, chimps and possibly other apes) could recognize their own images in a mirror. Self-recognition is one of those things that sets some of us apart from other animals. Well, as NPR's John Nielsen reports, dolphins also now make the grade, according to some ingenious experiments in tanks with mirrors.

Missile Defense
President Bush this afternoon announced he would proceed with developing a missile shield that would protect the United States from at least some forms of missile attack. The president said the system would be designed to stop a limited number of missiles that had been fired by minor powers, by terrorists or by accident. He said he thought this could be done without withdrawing from the 1972 treaty that banned anti-ballistic missile systems. NPR's Don Gonyea reports from the White House.

Birth Control Exams
NPR's Patricia Neighmond reports on a study which finds a woman need not get a complete physical in order for her doctor to determine whether its safe to use hormonal birth control, like "the pill." The study appears in this week's Journal of the American Medical Association.

Israel Meeting
Robert Siegel talks with NPR's Vicky O'Hara about today's meeting in Washington between Secretary of State Colin Powell and Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres. They discussed efforts to bring about a cease-fire in the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, as a step toward resuming peace talks.

Un-Hiring Employees
NPR's Elaine Korry reports that high-tech companies are cutting jobs by un-hiring the new college graduates who have yet to report to work. The graduates are paid as much as two months' salary as an un-signing bonus.
