Clergy In the Locker Room
Commentator Frank Deford isn't sure members of the clergy belong in the locker room. Deford alleges that many team chaplains are using the guise of Christianity to cozy up to their favorite sports celebrities.
<I>The Dish</I>
From Member station WKSU Mark Urycki reports on a new movie set in Australia entitled, The Dish. It's the first feature film to explore Australia's role in the Apollo 11 mission. In the tiny town of Parkes stands a 210 foot radio telescope that helped to capture the weak TV images Apollo 11 sent from the moon.
War on Cancer
As All Things Considered celebrates its 30th anniversary, we're hearing a series of special reports on other things that are 30 years old. Today, host Linda Wertheimer examines the war on cancer, which was initiated by President Richard Nixon in May, 1971, when he pledged $100 million to cancer research. Linda Wertheimer spends time with five doctors who have been involved in cancer research and treatment for the past 30 years. We meet a parent who lost her child to the disease in the 1970s and a family whose 9 year old is undergoing treatment right now.

Bush: Social Security
It has been a week of campaign promise fulfillment for President Bush. He has struck a deal with Congress regarding a budget for the next fiscal year and announced his plans to proceed with a high-tech defense system to protect the U.S. from ballistic missiles. And today he named the members of a high-level commission who will make recommendations for reforming the Social Security system. The new panel will be dominated by members who are interested in allowing at least some Social Security contributions to be invested privately. NPR's Don Gonyea reports from the White House.

DNA evidence may exonerate four Chicago men convicted 13 years ago of the rape and murder of a medical student. New analysis appears to show they could not have committed the rape. Robert Siegel talks with Steve Mills, staff reporter for the Chicago Tribune.

Pneumatic Tubes
Medical labs and drive-in banks are still using the pneumatic tube, whose heyday was back in the 19th century when the device was a means of sending messages from building to building. The tube made a comeback in the 1970's when engineers figured out how to make it gentle enough for hospitals to transport blood samples. Joel Obermayer reports from Danville, Pennsylvania.
