Fame Came Late for Buena Vista's Ferrer
The lead singer of the music group the Buena Vista Social Club, Ibrahim Ferrer, has died at 78. He didn't become a star until a 1997 film based on the Cuban group's work drew international acclaim. He won two Grammys after he turned 70.

Balloon Incident Ends Ostrich Farmer's Career
Melissa Block talks to Arizona Ostrich Rancher D.C. Cogburn about the day his ostriches stampeded several years ago, and the financial woes he's had ever since. He says a hot-air balloon so spooked the birds that they panicked; many were seriously injured. His loss to the balloonists in a civil lawsuit has led Cogburn to quit the business.

Israeli Shooter was AWOL from Army
A 19-year-old Israeli man absent without leave from the Army opened fire on Israeli Arabs riding a bus in northern Israel Thursday, killing four people and injuring at least a dozen more. He was beaten to death by an enraged crowd. The violence heightens tensions over Israel's planned pullout from settlements in Gaza.

'Jarhead' and the Attraction of War
The new film Jarhead tells the story of a marine sniper in the first Gulf War, who never fires a shot. Jacki Lyden talks with director Sam Mendes about why he chose to make the movie, which is based on Anthony Swofford's memoir with the same title. Mendes says that he wanted to explore why soldiers are drawn to war, even those who oppose it.
