  • In his state-of-the-state address last night, Michigan Governor John Engler announced a new plan to move welfare recipients off the unemployment rolls in four counties and two other communities. NPR's Don Gonyea reports that unlike other states, Michigan's goal is to eliminate unemployment entirely among its welfare recipients, rather than just reduce it.
  • Alice McGill performs the words of abolitionist and woman's rights activist, Sojourner Truth - in a speech titled, "And Ain't I A Woman?". It was given at a woman's rights convention in Akron, Ohio in 1851. Sojourner Truth (real name, Isabella Bomefree) was born a slave, circa 1799, in Ulster County, New York. She was emanicipated by state law in 1827 and went on to become a popular public speaker.
  • NPR's Richard Gonzales reports on the damage assessments from the flooding throughout California. Today, more evacuation alerts were issued in the northern part of the state. Several major levee breaks have created catastrophic flooding in Sacramento and San Joaquin Counties. One new concern is water contamination -- officials now fear that saltwater could be pushed up the San Joaquin delta into the drinking-water supply for Los Angeles.
