'The 21st' Coming To GLT Weekday Lineup

WILL/Illinois Public Media

Beginning Monday, there will be a program addition to the GLT Monday through Friday schedule. Next week, you'll be hearing a show called The 21st at 11 weekday mornings.

Sound Ideas will be heard during its midday origination slot at 12 noon instead of 11 AM. Sound Ideas will continue to air each evening at 6.

During a Sound Ideas interview, The 21st host Niala Boodhoo said the show's name is a nod to Illinois' status as the 21st state in the union.

"Our tagline for the show is '21st century radio for the 21st state.' We will be a daily call-in show but a lot of the audience participation will be digital interaction. People will be able to interact with us online, through Twitter and Facebook as well as traditional phone calls," she said.

Boodhoo said the goal is to broadcast The 21st live every day.

"We plan to have feature stories, but much of it will be live, taking listeners to different conversations occurring across the state," Boodhoo said.

When GLT begins airing The 21st next week, it will expand the fledgling network to stations in three markets. In addition to the originating Champaign-Urbana market, the show also airs in Springfield.

Willis is a Bloomington, IL, native. During his senior year at Bloomington High School, he finished third in the "Radio Speaking" division of the state speech contest, the only year he competed.
