It's about time! That's the feeling of many Wonder Woman fans as the DC legend finally gets her own blockbuster movie.
Shari Zeck, Interim Dean of ISU's Milner Library and GLT's Culture Maven was wowed by the superhero film. "It had a truly heroic woman," Zeck declared enthusiastically. "There were a lot of women with muscles being proud of their muscles. So much of it was about capable women, strong women, extraordinary women -- the kinds of things that we're so used to seeing in superhero movies, in general. It was funny, and it was charming and it also had heart."
Zeck noted to strong performances of Gal Gadot and Chris Pine. "The romance didn't take over the film. It seemed appropriate and it was heartfelt. It slid into the action film genre really quite seamlessly. It was just a fun movie."
Wonder Woman has sparked boffo box office, with the biggest ever opening for a film directed by a woman -- Patty Jenkins. Money talks in Hollywood, and Zeck hears what its saying.
"It's saying that women can direct action pictures. Women directors can direct blockbusters. And that women leads can open a film -- can open a film big. The DC franchise continues on a winning streak."
There was just one little thing that bothered Zeck about the film: body hair. Or rather, the lack there of. "Not a pit hair on them! Really, really irritated me," Zeck admitted wryly. "It's the long head of hair and everything else clean shaven. It's infantilism and it's ridiculous."
"But I tell you, this film has presented this tremendous relief to people. We're finally seeing things that we've dreamed about on screen. This is incredibly powerful."
