Report Finds No Sorensen Misconduct On County Time

An independent review of Matt Sorensen's financial dealings while serving as McLean County Board chair finds no evidence of illegal or unethical conduct.

The review was conducted by former Normal town attorney Steve Mahrt, who produced a 600-plus page document. Sorensen resigned his seat in January following indictment on federal wire fraud charges in connection with a business dealing. He has pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Among Mahrt's findings is a $7,500 payment to an individual who was a business partner with Sorensen. The report said there is no indication those funds found their way to Sorensen. McLean County Auditor Michelle Anderson's office also contributed to the report, which was submitted to States Attorney Jason Chambers. Chambers said he intends to follow up on the payment.

The report also recommended adoption of a disclosure policy for vendors regarding their officers and ownership interest, and revising part of the County purchasing policy.

Sorensen was re-nominated to his county board post in this week's primary, but it's not certain if he will remain on the ballot in the fall.

Willis is a Bloomington, IL, native. During his senior year at Bloomington High School, he finished third in the "Radio Speaking" division of the state speech contest, the only year he competed.
