Green Top Grocery Co-op Sets Construction Timeline

Bloomington-Normal's start-up food co-op Green Top Grocery has set a construction timeline.

Expect to see earth-moving equipment on the site at 921 E. Washington Street in Bloomington beginning in July. General Manager Michael Pennington says most of the work then will be installing underground utilities with the bulk of construction occurring late in the year.

"We are going to be constructing the shell throughout most of this fall, and then the interior of the building during the winter and spring, and then hopefully opening the store in the spring or summer of 2017," Pennington said.

A ceremonial groundbreaking is set for June 28th at 4:30 P.M. Pennington said the June 28th event is a milestone, but the growth process for Green Top continues.

"This is a $3.6 million project and we're about $200,000 short of our fundraising goal. We're going to continue taking loans throughout this process," Pennington added.

He said he hopes the amount of loans will increase once people start to see work happening at the site. The 10,000 square foot full-service grocery store will feature locally grown and organic produce from independent and farmers and producers.
