Illinois State University reopens following storm-induced power outage

Emergency crews in Bloomington and Normal have responded to multiple reports of downed trees and power lines following a Wednesday afternoon storm.

The Illinois State University has reopened and will resume normal operations at 8 p.m. since power has been restored across the campus.

A brief but powerful storm swept through Bloomington-Normal mid-afternoon, causing scattered power outages throughout the community.

The National Weather Service office in Lincoln has reported tree limbs down in multiple locations in Bloomington and Towanda.

The Normal Fire Department reported there are numerous trees and wires down throughout the community.

Bloomington Police said the city’s fire department also has been responding to numerous reports of downed power lines throughout the city. The department is asking motorists to drive with caution and to avoid downed power lines.

Ameren has been responding to the outages. There is no time estimate for when power will be restored. The utility reports it has more than 2,200 customers statewide without power as of 7:30 p.m.

Wind gusts were reported at 60 mph at 3:18 p.m.

There have been no immediate reports of injuries.

The university notified the campus community at 7:09 p.m. that power was restored. Bone Student Center and Milner Library were among the building which lost power.
