The Unit 5 school board on Wednesday picked its contractor for a proposed $1 million special needs addition to Colene Hoose Elementary School.
The addition will provide easier access for students with social or emotional difficulties. Colene Hoose Principal Adam Zbrozek said it will give these students appropriate space to learn.
“It protects their safety, their dignity. It gives our staff an appropriate space to be able to work with them. And it, in terms of our community and our families and things like that, it gives us more levers to be able to help our kids move forward,” Zbrozek said.
The new space, including four classrooms and an added bus lane, will allow for students with special needs to better integrate into the school.
“We’re a hub for the district, so 17 elementary buildings feed us students who can’t be supported in their home schools, and so they come to us to help reintegrate back,” Zbrozek said.
Peoria-based Bishop Bros. will be the general contractor. The project will be funded primarily from land dedication fees collected by the Town of Normal from developers.
The board also appointed new members Amy Roser and Alan Kalitzky.
