Normandy Village is part of the One Normal Plaza area redevelopment of the old Illinois Soldiers and Sailors Children's Home.

A controversial zoning text change is back on the agenda for Thursday's Normal Planning Commission meeting.

The proposal would create four sub-areas within One Normal Plaza, the site of the old Illinois Soldiers and Sailors Children's Home. Each sub-area would have a list of permitted and special uses, including, perhaps, eating and drinking establishments.

Some nearby residents have objected to the potential for a brew-pub or other alcohol-related establishment being allowed. They said it would destroy the character of the neighborhood.

The pandemic halted in-person meetings just as the issue was to go to the commission for discussion. Town staff said they would not bring the issue up until in-person meetings resumed and those interested could attend. That will happen Aug. 5.

As a matter of disclosure WGLT General Manager R.C. McBride is a member of the Normal Planning Commission.
