Bloomington Police say a 17-year-old pregnant girl is expected to survive after she was shot “indiscriminately” at an east-side apartment complex on Monday.

According to a news release, officers with the Bloomington Police Department were called to the 1300 block of North Hershey Road at about 7:30 p.m. for a report of shots fired. Officers said they found evidence gunfire struck one of the occupied apartments and hit a pregnant juvenile.

“It seems the suspect or suspects fired indiscriminately toward that apartment area,” BPD public information officer John Fermon said, indicating the weapon was fired from outside the apartment and the victim was inside. “I don’t want to say it was a random act, because we will learn that throughout the investigation.”

The victim was taken to the emergency room at Carle BroMenn Medical Center in Normal. Fermon said the girl's injuries are not considered life threatening.

Police aren’t saying whether the victim lived at that residence. Fermon added other people were inside the apartment at the time of the shooting but did not indicate how many.

“Both of those details are important to the investigation or at least can be during interviews when/if we locate the suspects,” he said.

Fermon added no additional injuries were reported.

Police have not released any information about a possible suspect or suspects. BPD asks anyone with information on the case to contact detective Kevin Raisbeck at (309) 434-2593 or kraisbeck@cityblm.org.

According to data on shootings compiled by WGLT, this marks the third shooting in the 1300 block of North Hershey Road since March.

This is the eighth shooting incident reported in Bloomington-Normal since Aug. 27.
