Five children escaped serious injury when their bus overturned near Shirley on Friday morning.

McLean County sheriff's police said a car drove into a school bus with children Friday morning, forcing the bus onto its side in a ditch.

The crash just east of the Shirley exit to Interstate 55 happened at 7:30 a.m. Five children were on the bus. Deputies said the driver suffered a minor injury and the children were all released to their parents, apparently uninjured.

The sheriff's department did not identify the school district involved.

The sheriff's department says the driver of the car disobeyed a stop sign at 1155 East and 850 North Roads. The bus was heading east. The driver of the car was not injured.

The department said the incident remains under investigation.
