Bloomington Police said a man hit by gunfire had a kit to convert a gun into an automatic weapon.

Officers say the 21-year old man was trying to destroy the so-called "multi-piece auto sear" even as emergency room workers were treating him for non-life threatening injuries. The item, also known as a fully automatic switch kit, is illegal.

Officers jailed the man after treatment and he's being held on $500,000 bond.

The gunfire happened in the 500 block of North Main Street about 2 a.m. Sunday.
