District 87 has announced its schools will remain closed on Friday.

Bloomington-Normal children will stay home for a third straight day due to this week's major snowstorm.

Unit 5 is shifting to e-learning on Friday due to continuing hazardous road conditions. District 87 in Bloomington is closed entirely, with no remote learning planned.

"The safety of our students and staff is our priority," Unit 5 said in a message to parents. "Unit 5 has been meeting with city, county, and other emergency management agencies regarding road conditions. While some neighborhoods are fully plowed, many roads are still snow packed as a result of blowing winds."

District 87 schools will be closed entirely.

“Due to the current weather conditions and the inability of our buses to reach many residential areas in time for the morning routes, there will be no school for District 87 staff or students on Friday, February 4th. There will not be e-learning activities on this day,” Superintendent Barry Reilly said in a message on Facebook and sent to the media.

The snowstorm that started early Wednesday night has dumped about 10 to 12 inches of snow in Bloomington-Normal. A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. today.

District 87 canceled classes on Wednesday and Thursday in advance of the storm, partly because of the difficulty in finding enough substitute teachers to staff virtual learning at a time when some staff members are out with COVID-19.

Unit 5 schools canceled classes on Thursday after a day of online instruction on Wednesday.

Illinois State University announced its lab schools Thomas Metcalf and University High School will be closed on Friday, with no remote learning offered.
