The state environmental protection agency has canceled a household hazardous waste collection day in McLean County that was set for September.
The Ecology Action Center in Normal said Friday that a fire at a processing center in Liverpool, Ohio, means the state can't get rid of the chemicals, oil-based paint, and other hazardous substances collected.
The center said the shutdown of the processing facility will probably affect permanent dropoff sites as well until late fall.
The Ecology Action Center, which coordinates household hazardous waste collection events in McLean County, said the next likely collection day for household hazardous waste will be in the fall of 2023.
The center urges people in Bloomington-Normal to safely store that kind of waste until permanent dropoff sites reopen or a collection event is scheduled.
