Voters in Unit 5 will have options in selecting who will lead their school district next year.

Seven candidates filed for election to the Unit 5 school board on Monday, the first day for candidates to file. Four seats will be open in the April 4, 2023, election.

Two incumbents filed for re-election as of 5 p.m. Monday: Amy Roser and Kelly Pyle. They are running along with Amee Jada, Steve Mackowiak, and Alex Williams for a maximum of three seats on the seven-member board.

The Normal-based school district places limits on how many board members can serve from certain geographical areas in the district.

Dennis Frank and Brad Wurth both filed in township areas that allow no more than one board member each.

The school board election comes after Unit 5 voters rejected a referendum Nov. 8 to raise revenue to plug a years-long budget deficit. Board president Barry Hitchens and Alan Kalitzky also are up for re-election.

District 87, Heartland

In Bloomington-based District 87, there are two candidates so far for three open seats. Board president Mark Wylie and fellow incumbent Veleda Harvey have applied. James Almeda’s seat also is up for election.

Heartland Community College has two open seats on its board of trustees. Seats currently held by Mary Campbell and Cecilia Long are on the ballot for six-year terms. As of Monday afternoon, no candidate filings had been processed.

The deadline to file is Dec. 19.
