The Miracle League of Central Illinois, a baseball league for children and adults with physical and mental disabilities, is partnering with the Normal Parks and Recreation Department with a goal of bringing baseball to more people.
The league is in its 13th season playing on rubberized turf at Miracle League Field at the Corn Crib in north Normal and is seeking extra help on game days, said Miracle League board president Steve Mace.
“As our board looked to the future, we realized our small group of volunteers and resources may not allow our league to reach full potential," said Mace. "This led us to explore the possibility of collaborating with the Normal Parks & Recreation Department to benefit from their professional expertise and resources.”
The experiences on game day likely won’t be much different from previous years, said Normal Parks and Recreation director Doug Damery, but he said his department is working behind the scenes to make the experience easier for everyone.
“Our professional staff, this is what we do, parks and recreation, we put on programming and leagues, we have online registration and we have marketing and access to different groups of volunteers than they have access to, so we’ll be working together with them,” Damery said.
Registration for athletes is open now on the Normal Parks and Recreation website. Scholarships are available.
