Ohio murder fugitive caught in Bloomington

A fugitive from murder charges, on the run for 7 1/2 years, has been captured in Bloomington, according to the U.S. Marshal’s Service.

Martino Giles, 35, was taken into custody Friday evening at a building in the 3000 block of Clearwater Avenue.

Giles allegedly shot and killed his roommate in Cleveland, Ohio, in 2015 over rent money and a watch.

The Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force had declared it a cold case until recently. Giles was known to use aliases and had even been arrested before under a false name. He was released before law enforcement knew his true identity.

“Investigators in Cleveland never let up on this case. The victim’s family deserves justice and hopefully this arrest is the first step in the process,” said U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott (Ohio).

U.S. Marshal’s deputies from the central district of Illinois made the arrest.

“I would also like to thank the outstanding work from U.S. Marshal Brendan Heffner and his team in central Illinois,” said Elliott.

Giles will be held at the McLean County Jail pending extradition to Ohio.
