Audio-rich stories from around Bloomington-Normal, recorded during the summer of 2023. New episodes every Friday on WGLT's Sound Ideas.

Special Olympics brings thousands of athletes to Twin Cities in return to pre-COVID-size summer games

Today on Sound Ideas, WGLT debuted a new weekly feature you'll hear over the next few months. It's called Sounds of Summer, an audio postcard that captures the sounds (and sights) of the big events and the everyday pastimes that make this time of year special.

We'll take you to festivals, concerts, parades, baseball diamonds and even a restful day at the swimming pool.

We begin our series with an event that dates back decades in Bloomington-Normal — the Special Olympics Illinois summer games, an annual celebration that brings thousands of athletes, coaches, volunteers and families to the Twin Cities every June.

WGLT's Eric Stock takes you to the kickoff event at Hancock Stadium.

Eric Stock is the News Director at WGLT. You can contact Eric at ejstoc1@ilstu.edu.
