A Normal woman is facing multiple charges after a traffic crash that left a 2-year-old child dead on July 2.
Bloomington Police said in a news release Tuesday that officers responded to reports of a crash at Hershey Road and Gloucester Circle on July 2, where they "observed a vehicle had struck a concrete bridge barrier railing."
Kiley Sturm, 33, was the driver and was conscious, police said, but a 2-year-old child was unresponsive. Police and paramedics with the Bloomington Fire Department attempted life-saving measures, the release said, but the child was pronounced dead at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said the child, Adalynn Sturm, was a backseat passenger and it's not known whether the toddler was restrained in the vehicle. The child died of multiple blunt force injuries, the coroner said.
Police confirmed to WGLT that Sturm was the mother of the child who died.
Sturm faces multiple charges, including aggravated DUI involving death, driving under the influence of alcohol, improper lane usage, failure to wear a seat belt and failure to restrain a child.
In a statement, BPD Chief Jamal Simington described the incident as "a stark reminder of the dangers of driving while intoxicated."
"This was a very tough investigation for our first responders to endure," he said. "Please keep everyone in your thoughts and prayers concerning this loss of life."
The incident remains under investigation, according to BPD's release.
