Inside Art video: Sculpting concrete with Aianna Zachary

Episode three of WGLT's Inside Art features concrete sculptor Aianna Zachary.

WGLT’s Inside Art is a video series that highlights the behind-the-scenes creative process that artists in central Illinois go through to produce their art.

Episode 3 features concrete sculptor and Hangar Art Company co-founder Aianna Zachary.

“I moved [to Bloomington] to change my life,” said Zachary, “and I did.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Zachary said Hangar Art Company co-founder Santino Lamancusa opened the art gallery as a place to showcase “big art." Hangar is where Zachary met fellow artist Tom Kirk.

Zachary said she, along with other artists, helped Kirk work on the concrete lady sculpture at the sculpture park near downtown Bloomington. As more concrete-sculpting projects came along, Zachary said, “It got to a point where Tom [Kirk] was able to have me full time.”

Right now Zachary’s full-time job is concrete sculpting for Kirk. Zachary said she is currently working on a sculpture in Kirk’s house. The sculptures she has contributed on with Kirk and other artists can be seen any time at 410 S. Madison St.
