One dead after Illinois State Police exchange gunfire with subject near Lexington

A person is dead following an Illinois State Police response to a call about shots fired Saturday afternoon on Interstate 55 near Lexington, according to a press release.

Police were called to mile marker 178 on I-55 at 12:42 p.m. and when they arrived on the scene, ISP said they found two cars pulled over on the shoulder of the highway. One subject was reportedly shooting at the other vehicle.

ISP said troopers "exchanged gunfire with the subject," who was fatally wounded by police. No one else was injured.

The state police's Division of Internal Investigations is looking into the matter, per law. Once the investigation is completed, information will be turned over to the McLean County State Attorney's Office.

Police did not provide any further detail on the incident, including the identities of the deceased and those involved.

I-55 was closed for traffic in both directions for several hours Saturday, which may have caused delays on Route 66, according to a Lexington Police Department post. Roads had reopened as of roughly 7:30 p.m., according to Chief Tim Edmiaston.
