A Bloomington man was found guilty on Friday of murder in the February 2023 shooting death of Kiejoun Watts.
Desmond S. Sterling, 23, was convicted of first-degree murder in the shooting death of the 20-year-old victim. Charges accused Sterling of shooting Watts in the head behind Victory Church, located southeast of Bloomington.
Judge William Yoder announced the verdict Friday afternoon following three days of testimony and closing arguments on Friday.
Assistant State’s Attorney Ashley Scarborough said in opening remarks that surveillance video from businesses in the area, combined with smartphone technology, provided McLean County Sheriff’s Department investigators with critical information about the incident.
McLean County public defender Brian McEldowney argued that the state’s evidence was based on Sterling having an opportunity to kill the victim. The state lacked forensic evidence tying the defendant to the crime, said the defense lawyer.
"Unfortunately, nothing we do in the courtroom will ease the pain of the loss of a loved one," said McLean County State's Attorney Erika Reynolds. "However, it is our hope that this will provide some peace to the victim's family and friends."
Sentencing is set for May 2. Sterling is eligible for 45 years to life in prison, Reynolds said.
