Bloomington fire crews battled a house fire Thursday at 515 E. Chestnut St.

Bloomington fire crews had to rescue someone from the roof of a home that was heavily damaged by fire Thursday afternoon.

According to a news release from the Bloomington Fire Department, crews were called to the home at 515 E. Chestnut St. shortly after 3 p.m. Emergency dispatchers said crews reported fire on the first two floors and the third-floor attic, said fire department public information officer Frank Friend.

“A significant amount of work needed to be done quickly to get their fire under control,” said Friend, adding the blaze was under control in a little over an hour.

Friend said firefighters raised an extension ladder in the smoke to rescue the victim, who was taken to a hospital, where they are reportedly in stable condition. He said no one else was inside and one dog was secured and was not injured.

A damage estimate was not immediately available. Friend said the house to the east also sustained heat damage.

Friend said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

A portion of nearby Clinton Street between Locust and Walnut streets was closed for more than two hours while crews battled the fire.

Bloomington fire was assisted by the Normal Fire Department, while Nicor, Ameren, Bloomington Police and Bloomington Public Works all responded to the scene.
