Two Chicago-area men were convicted of murder Friday in connection with a 2020 shooting on Bloomington’s west side, officials said. A third suspect in the case remains at large.

Malcolm J. Johnson, 31, of Riverdale, and Kevon Moon, 25, of Chicago, were convicted by a McLean County jury following this week’s trial, prosecutors said. They were accused in the killing of Jaleel Johnson, a 20-year-old father and concrete laborer, in front of 1605 Iowa St. in Bloomington on Oct. 12, 2020. Two other people were also shot in the incident.
“Because of the hard work of the entire Bloomington Police Department, and more specifically Detective Tyrel Klein along with the lead prosecutors Assistant State's Attorneys Brad Rigdon and Aaron Fredrick, justice was reached on behalf of the two victims in this case and our streets are safer. It is our hope that this will provide some closure to the victim and the victims' families,” McLean County State’s Attorney Erika Reynolds said in a statement.
Johnson and Moon were convicted of murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, mob action, and obstructing justice, prosecutors said.
The third suspect in the case is James Moon, 25, who remains at large. Bloomington Police said last year that he should be considered armed and dangerous.
Kevon Moon and Johnson will be sentenced July 22. Both men are eligible for between 63 and 153 years in prison, prosecutors said.
