The Bloomington–Normal YMCA has announced a new partnership with the Central Illinois branch of the national organization, Girls on the Run.

Girls on the Run is a nonprofit organization that sponsors running programs meant to inspire and empower young girls. YMCA Wellness Director Breena Campbell shares these goals and more for the new partnership.

"This partnership aligns perfectly with our commitment to supporting the physical, emotional and social well-being of our community's youth,” Campbell said in a statement. “Together, we can empower the next generation of girls to be strong and confident leaders."

Beginning Sept. 2, the YMCA will serve as a “host site” for the organization, holding meets on Mondays and Thursdays from 5:15-6:15 p.m. The program will accept girls grades 3-6 and run throughout the fall, culminating in a 5K run on Nov. 9 in Springfield.

Earlier this summer, Bloomington-Normal YMCA additionally partnered with the city of Bloomington to offer discounted pool passes. Their new 74,000-square-foot facility on St. Joseph Drive in Bloomington opened in 2022 and also houses Easterseals Central Illinois.

Registration for Girls on the Run can be found on the YMCA website, and closes on Sept. 1.
