Illinois State Police said a suspect is hospitalized after being shot by an officer Thursday morning in Lexington.

According to a news release from the agency, officers were alerted around 9:35 a.m. to a vehicle on Interstate 74 in Champaign that authorities believe was involved in an armed robbery in Texas.

The vehicle stopped at a gas station in Lexington around 10:30 a.m. State Police say the driver, Ryan Aeron Stanley Hurst, 18, from Arkansas, pointed a gun in the officers’ direction after police tried to arrest him and a passenger, Joseph Martin Hernandez, 19, of Texas.

ISP said officers fired multiple shots, hitting Hurst. Officers provided first aid until Hurst was transported to the hospital, the agency said. He’s listed in stable condition.

Hernandez, who was not injured, was taken into police custody.

No officers were injured in the incident.

State Police said the investigation is ongoing, adding it is processing evidence and conducting interviews. It plans to submit its findings to the McLean County State’s Attorney’s Office.
