Illinois recorded record pot sales in 2024, but some question why profits are mostly going to large, out-of-state companies instead of business owners from Black and Brown communities.

A cannabis cultivation operation in Livingston County is closing, putting 82 employees out of work.

According to the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity’s monthly report of mass layoffs, PharmaCann has informed employees that it plans to close its plant in Dwight on Jan. 13.

PharmaCann has cultivating and processing facilities in Illinois and five other states.

Crain’s Chicago Business reports PharmaCann has been in default on leases connected to several of its retail and cultivation properties. Crain’s reports falling wholesale prices and increased competition have strained the cannabis market.

Company officials have not responded to WGLT’s request for comment.
