Rojo arrived at Miller Park Zoo in 2017. He had previously fathered two cubs at Topeka Zoo. Sumatran tigers are considered critically endangered in the wild.

One of Miller Park Zoo's most notable animals has died. The zoo's beloved tiger, Rojo, was euthanized on Tuesday.

In a statement, the zoo said the 19-year-old Sumantran tiger had been receiving treatment for renal disease. Staff said he was not responding to treatment and rapidly declining.

Rojo came to Miller Park from Topeka Zoo in Kansas in 2017. Sumatran tigers are considered critically endangered in the wild due to habitat destruction.

Median life expectancy for the species is 18 years.
