Mark Jontry, the regional superintendent of schools for McLean, DeWitt, Livingston and Logan counties, is stepping down 14 months earlier than expected — likely paving the way for his successor to take office sooner.
Jontry, 56, announced last August that he would not seek re-election this year. He issued a statement Friday that he now plans to retire May 1.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my two decades here at the ROE, but the time has come for me to pass the torch,” Jontry said.
Jontry has been with the Regional Office of Education [ROE] for over two decades. He’s been the superintendent since 2008.
At the time, Jontry endorsed assistant regional superintendent Molly Allen for the job. She is the only candidate to file for the Republican primary. No Democrat has filed for the seat.
Jontry said he is recommending the four county board chairs appoint Allen to the post when he steps down.
“I am encouraged that they will agree with my recommendation,” he said.
Regional Offices of Education in Illinois provide various services to schools including educator licensing and professional development. It also oversees school bus driver training and permitting.
The Bloomington-based ROE also operates an academy for junior high and high school students who are facing mental health challenges.
