Two men suing the City of Bloomington for unlawful arrest and other rights violations are negotiating a settlement.

Court records filed Friday show the parties have agreed "in principle" to "amicably resolve" a complaint alleging assistant police chief Paul Williams violated the rights of Garrett Chubb and Lenelle Higgins by ordering their arrest during a June altercation in east Bloomington.

The city has until Oct. 23 to answer or resolve the lawsuit. The plaintiffs, Chubb and Higgins, did not oppose the extension but requested the city omit the context behind it. Their attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding his clients' decision to settle.

Williams filed for retirement in the lawsuit's wake. The City of Bloomington previously stated it does not comment on pending litigation.

The city has not clarified the status of an internal police investigation now that Williams no longer works for the department.
